Do the Math

“Do the Math” explored the kind of activism brought out by a single man, Bill McKibben. After writing a landmark piece in Rolling Stone magazine that contributed some important numbers and statistics regarding global warming and fossil fuels, Bill is back for a sold-out lecture which further expands upon the points made in the article.

The most relevant call to order made in the lecture video was the call to stand up against the fossil fuel industry. It’s not easy; the fossil fuel industry is powerful, stubborn, and dangerous, and so he asks for the entire country to help join in the fight against these too-wealthy industries that burn gigatons of carbon dixoide. He called for the country to divest against fossil fuels and used student-led unions as an example. The “Divest fossil fuels” movement is gaining much momentum in schools across the country. Students are protesting on their campuses, urging their school leaders to not invest money in an industry that pollutes and slowly destroys the earth. Students protesting against their leaders is the kind of unrest that Bill is looking for in all of us.

Bill Mckibben is viewed as a hero in environmental circles. He travels across the country meeting artists, activists, and normal townspeople, spreading his message across the land and inspiring people to follow in his footsteps. The Do the Math Tour was a success, selling out almost every show around the country. The tour is now over but the campaign is only beginning, as Bill Mckibben, slowly but surely, fights for a clean earth free of pollution from fossil fuels.
