Reflection: Du Bois

“The Souls of Black Folk”, written by W.E.B. Du Bois, explains the concept of “double consciousness”, and discusses his journey through the “Black Belt”. The section on double consciousness resonated with me a lot because as a black male living in the United States, I know exactly what he was describing. It made me think more in depth about this kind of consciousness and how in one way or another it makes it exceptionally difficult for black folks to have one unified identity, due to the fact that it has been split and blurred into several other identities, time and time again. The section on the black belt gave me more direct knowledge to how Atlanta, and other states have high populations of black people.
