Integrative Studio: Avatar – Self Portraits

Journey to the Finished Project

Initial Interview:

I learned elements  about a memory that I thought I knew well enough through the eyes of my mother. Our phone conversation was more intimate and meaningful than I ever expected, therefore i decided to use my mother’s words and recall asa vital inspiration to the self portrait I developed. Up until the conversation with my mother I did not have one longing thought about home since moving to New York City and assimilating to the community of The New School. Suddenly, reminiscent emotions bubbled to the surface as I spoke with my mother, and i decided to symbolize the varying feelings (avatars) that I experienced in my self portrait. The design that I created on my body through the use of contrasting white lines were not only meant to represent the pieces of myself that I have attempted to map together, but to symbolize a special piece of my heritage that lives through me because of my mother. Body art is a strong element in the celebrations of Afro-Caribbean culture. The white shapes and designs that are used to decorate the body are worn during events such as graduation, which was stated as my mother’s fondest memory of me in the interview.
