Drawing/Imaging: Places and Things – “Synthesize This”

Synthesize This

As expected, the entering and assimilation into college and its curriculum is a pivotal moment in any student’s life. As for me, the admission and experience of attending a primarily white private university in the United States has converted my awareness of the social and political position marginalized ethnic groups hold in the society of the institution of the New School (and similar ones) and in the nation as a whole. The sense of invisibility and neglect has overcome my perspective of institutional treatment towards groups, such as the black community. This is particularly felt in my experience not only as a black student, but as a black female student.

Therefore, this piece is to encompass the reconstructed narrative of the black student that I expected to live at this school, by its strategic marketing of inclusive activism and cultural tolerance, and the reality that hit me and multiple other students once they stepped through the door.
