Integrative Studio 2: Constructed Environments – Installation Art

Installation Art

This installation piece serves as a three dimensional and interactive embodiment of my personal experience of “Mammy”. Historically the term “Mammy” was utilized as a derogatory reference to black nursemaids or nannies in the southern parts of the United States. Inspired by a recent painting to display a commemorative and respectful representation of black mothers in the United States, I created a sort of shrine for my connection with the culture of Black mothers. In relation to the research paper I developed in Seminar, my piece uses the origin of the fabric and design tactics to symbolize the transference of culture from one region to a drastically polar one. Directly imported from the region of Northern Africa, teh fabrics serve as the primary communication of this symbolism. In addition, the installation is set up as a home-like sitting area in order to convey similar emotional ties that are curated by a black mother and her home.
