The image I chose above demonstrates what I hypothesize what the future of fashion will resemble. In reflecting on my visit to the museum I examined the way in which every piece I photographed made me feel. These pieces specifically stood out to me as I could not place them in the past, present or future; they are pieces which are simply timeless. A quote which appreciates this way of design is Megan O’Brady’s commentary on the fashion future, “Our current moment has resulted in what one might call an extended spell of beautiful eclecticism, a temporal salad of pasts and futures past.” ( O’Grady, Megan. “Fashions for Future.” https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/03/21/t-magazine/fashion-future-history.html (Accessed 11.14.2019)) This way of describing futuristic design, are the very words which I identified with in viewing this exhibit. I truly felt that although these garments were a result of futures past they still seem to resemble aspects of modernist designs in the current moment. This innovative way in which Pierre Cardin uses fabric manipulation to create movement through the garment truly is a statement that cannot be linked with any current design, past design, yet can only be a display for what the futuristic fashion may resemble. This goes along with O’Brady’s commentary on the link between past iterations of future design and exactly what the future of fashion has become. O’Brady states, “….the retro-future is powerful precisely because it reveals to us the faultiness of those dreams, the seductive gap between our fantasies of what we thought the future should look like and what it turned out to be.” ( O’Grady, Megan. “Fashions for Future.” https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/03/21/t-magazine/fashion-future-history.html (Accessed 11.14.2019))In this excerpt O’Brady outlines the outcome of past future design, she comments on how the evolution of fashion is unmatched with ideals and dreams. Rather in reality modernist fashion cannot be related to anything as it pushes itself as a lone category based on thought and innovation. Overall the display of fashion and the future serves as a time capsule to the very dream like quality in timelessness. This way of design is incredibly powerful and speaks for itself in that it is truly the future of fashion
