This project felt comfortable for me, but it also posed an interesting idea that I found fascinating: taking 2D objects and forming them to create one 3D object. It is a simple idea that we all take for granted, but I was excited to get going on it.

After the sharp, geometric shapes in my pedestal, I wanted to make this piece more organic. A theme of mine I’ve noticed in this class is that while I strive to create abstract work, I also subtly include some sort of narrative, and this project was no different. After messing around in my sketchbook the gradual morphing of shapes and having trouble changing from one real shape to another, I decided to start with a real object and see what happened. So I drew a palm tree, mostly because I wish I could be in a warm place with them and I was daydreaming about traveling to one. Their leaves have small sharp edges and with each change in shape I rounded a little bit each time. I loved the mushroom shape that came towards the end, and I decided that I really enjoyed the fat abstract blob at the end; looking at it all put together I feel that it encapsulates the detailed palm tree, almost hugging it.

I love the white, clean look and the shadows that the light creates on my palm tree. As a whole it has a growing volumetric shape, with narrative and abstract elements to it. Overall, my vision for this project was successful in the end.
