Int. Studio: Adrian Piper

This exhibit was extremely inspiring and admirable to me. This was honestly one of the best exhibits of contemporary and conceptual art I have been to. Adrian Piper once said, “one reason for making and exhibiting a work is to induce a reaction or change in the viewer”. Piper did this through multiple forms and executions, especially through an aperture.

Piper’s “Everything will be taken away” was a moving series in which she uses juxtaposition to invoke a reaction in the viewer. Through these photos, Piper communicates an aesthetic to the viewer to really think deeply. This statement, “Everything will be taken” is quite heavy. When I first read it, it made me question what “everything” really encompasses and I think that it is too much to even fathom. This statement, however, is also very relieving because it shows how insignificant really is. It personally made me think of spiritual enlightenment. It reminded me a lot of Buddhist nuances to let go of materialism and to focus on one’s spirituality, what really matters.
