The Value of Good Design

Upon entering the exhibition “The Value of Good Design” there is a sign that says “Good Design is not a label or a price tag. Good Design is international both in origin and appeal. Good Design is a statement and not a gadget. Good Design need not be costly. Good Design is neither a book of etiquette nor a social register. Good design is one that achieves integrity. Good design depends on the harmony established between the form of an object and its use.” That being said, for my toolkit I think the best object on the exhibition that connects to my toolkit are these words on the wall. This connects to my toolkit in helping me see what the idea of good design is. how do i produce something useful and tasteful while being mindful of the responsibility of design. For my toolkit, I want to make an educational kit that brings awareness to the water crisis issues happening worldwide but my community specifically are the Wayuu people of La Guajira, Colombia. When designing a toolkit to spread awareness I have to keep in mind that i have to achieve integrity and “harmony” between the form of what I produce and its use. The use of my toolkit would be to spread awareness but still achieve the responsibility I owe to the format I choose to spread awareness. I plan on making a poster, postcards and pins and keeping in mind the use of the objects and the point I’m trying to convey will be helpful in achieving my goal for this project. In this exhibition there are also several posters and other graphically designed pieces that i can take inspiration from and take note of while designing my poster for my toolkit.
