Ways of Seeing

On February 11, 2019. The time is 11:39 am; the weather is cloudy. I take the F train to school for drawing class. I sat next to the train door, and seat across from him. He stands still with open leg rely on one of the doors in the train. He wears a black yellow color beanie with Belgium flag symbol on the center. In addition, he wears a yellow and grey strip jacket outside and black zip sweater inside. He wears a loose fabric pant and non-slip shoes (restaurant shoes). Moreover, he carries a black backpack with two pockets with red lines on it. He looks around and put hands in his packet. His facial has a clean beard and skin is white. His height around 5.7 feet.

The way that he dresses, it looks like he is one of the employees in a restaurant. He wears a black sweater, loose plant and non-slip shoes, it symbols as an employee. In the restaurant, the worker didn’t like to wear a light color shirt because it might easy to get dirty and wear loose pant is comfortable when the restaurant in a busy hour. Moreover, he wears non-slip shoes because the floor in the kitchen of a restaurant is very slipping. He carries a backpack because he might prepare his lunch when he is work. The way that his wear is informal dress code compares with others who wear suitcase or white shirt with a tie. As a result of my observation about this person is a worker in a restaurant.

When I see this unknown person on the train, I didn’t think deeply about who is he will be. According to Berger said, “the more imaginative the work, the more profoundly it allows us to share the artist’s experience of the visible.” I think the way or thought from the visual that we can understand who is this person. In other words, when we see a person in the street or any public place; we can expose our thought to reality. In “Question Everything” article, by Jane F. Suri defines the word to design, “bring perspectives from experience to bear, and checking out your ideas against reality.” This quote is meaningful to the art student when the student views others, which will combine the idea to the things that they usually know, but in this hand, the student should ignore the thought from themselves.
