IS1 – Final Critique Points

The final Bridge 2 project was a tapestry made of materials like yarn, copper sheets, acrylic, rubber and cork sheets. It represents the urban planning and the forms associated with it. Since we went to the Greenacre Park, a pocket park in the middle of New York, we tried to create a piece inspired by by the contrast of natural and man made forms found in the park. Some interesting critique points made by my class mates were:

  1. On one hand the iterations were quite natural looking, abstract and had a flow to them whereas, the final piece was more literal, because it showed buildings to depict the concept of urban planning.
  2. The iterations were more grid-like and had a more symmetric design, but the final piece was less symmetric and more abstract. However, that seemed to work for the piece as when we think of urban planning in then modern world, we don’t think of grid like structures. The forms are more diverse looking.
  3. The materials like the sheet metal, cork sheets and the acrylic represent the man-made forms and the yarn depicts the more natural forms like the sky, clouds, waterfall and the grass.
  4. The uneven texture of the yarn adds to the aesthetic, as if it is a perfect imperfection. And the wood bar that hold the tapestry up acts like a good contrast to the piece.
  5. The tapestry is somewhat like the paintings made by Van Gogh, for example, the Starry Night because the clouds and the lines dividing each plane goes in abstract directions.
  6. The tapestry was described as warm and comfortable looking but at the same time had sharp characteristics. It was like a soft, comfortable sweater with jagged edges.
  7. The use of materials was nicely done as it keeps the eye busy, without being too overwhelming.
  8. It is a contrast between the idea of a tapestry, which was done in ancient cultures, and urban planning, which is a concept that came about in the late 20th century.
