Metro Map – Sustainable Systems

This project was to choose a place you love, point out an issue and suggest ways to tackle that issue.

For my final project, I want to study my home town, Gurgaon, in India. I really like Gurgaon as a place as I have spent more of my teenage years there. The crowd in Gurgaon is mostly young, as a lot of people who work in the MNCs choose to migrate there from New Delhi. Due to this there is a wide range of restaurants and stores run by young people, which adds to the vibe of the city. The architecture of the buildings is modern and people don’t hesitate in building experimental structures.

Gurgaon is an SEZ, or a Special Economic Zone in north India which flourished as a city in the last ten years. In order to make it grow as a city, the government of India allowed large Multinational Corporations to open up offices there for low costs and exempted them for paying taxes on the most part. Due to this, there are over 500 companies that have been established in Gurgaon with hundreds of thousands of people working in them. A large part of this working population lives in the neighboring city of New Delhi and commute from there every day. However, the public transport system in Gurgaon isn’t that developed and does not span all over the city and the Delhi Metro serves only a small northern portion of Gurgaon. Most people who choose to commute either take cabs or drive their own car. Doing this on a daily basis is very unsustainable and causes a large amount of pollution which leads to thick fog and breathing problems. In an economically growing city like Gurgaon, it is very important to have sustainable methods of transport, for example, a good connection of subway lines. My project is a call of action to create new metro lines (both over and underground) to facilitate public transportation. This will create a sustainable, cheap and environment-friendly way to travel for everyone.

My piece is an abstract subway map in the city of Gurgaon in India. It has several layers to depict the several consequences of the issue, that is not having a good public transport system. The stark white lines are representative of the subway lines. The faded pink lines and the turbulent, abstract background show how smog and pollution have reduced visibility in the city and are causing health problems. A good subway system is a necessity to create a cheap, sustainable and environment-friendly way to travel.
