androgyny as it relates to gender and sexuality

As a continuation of last weeks assignment, I was once again asked to create a collage daily for 6 days. These collages had to be centered around my desired research topic in seminar: Androgyny as it relates to gender and sexuality. The two rules for these collages were 1. I had to use pink, blue and purple in every collage and 2. I had to include a self portrait of some kind.

My collages ended up chronicling my journey of discovering and coming to appreciate androgyny. The process of realising my own fluidity has been very analytical for me. I made a lot of imaginary mind maps. I would scrutinise the facial features of male and female train passengers to understand what made some faces feminine and some faces masculine. I did the same thing with masculine and feminine mannerisms (walking, sitting, voice, facial expression). The process has also been very personal and emotional. My research process included looking at a lot of models with features I don’t have. I also began figuring out my own gender identity. All of this is in my work.

Reflection:

I didn’t like all of my collages as I was making them. I’m still on the fence about some of them. However, the process of making them felt very cathartic and freeing, because this is a topic that is so close to home. I don’t feel as though I need to continue them, nor do I want to, but this rendering of my experience might have been something I didn’t know I needed. Visualising the story I wanted to tell, and the points I wanted to make helped a lot with verbalising my feelings and ideas. This is important personally with understanding myself, and practically with moving on to write the research paper to which the collages are connected. I wouldn’t say that I’m proud of my work. Not because I’m ashamed of it, but because a diary entry isn’t a source of pride. It is instead a source of relief.

Notes from Critique

Rules:

Color palette

Self Portraits

Themes:

Being androgynous

Feels like following around artist in their own world

Casual, easygoing, intimate piece

Ownership

Color palette is very successful

Diverse range of artistic elements

Drawn elements look like they’re encasing the body (top middle photo) this photo is also most successful to Yashua

Creates interesting composition as the body is not just straight and standing

YK likes bottom middle photo but feels as if it’s too easy for the reader; giving too much away. Maybe handwrite instead of type? Or no text (mixed opinions in the class)

Taken Further:

Continue with the motif of the top middle
