M / F

M / F is a research project intended to get to the root of how the people around me assign gender. I arranged a sheet filled with an array of images varying in color, composition, figure, style etc. On another sheet I arranged a blurred version of the same photos. Under each image on both sheets, I placed the letters M and F as often seen on official paperwork inquiring about a persons gender. In this context the letters stand for masculine or feminine. I leave the gendering of each picture up to the viewer. This piece serves as a prompt for internal reflection on the part of the viewer, who should ask themself why they chose the answer they did, or realize that there’s no real way to gender some of the images. Also, sometimes the way they gender the actual image may differ from how they gender the blurred image, which goes to show that sometimes we can’t see everything that goes into developing a gender identity and that gender is not always as simple and clear cut as a lot of people assume.
