Bridge 1: My Box / Visual Culture

My Charm Box Inventory

  1. My Ring– 18K Yellow Gold, Grey Diamond, worn on the right hand ring finger.

Something I try to wear everyday, I share it with eight other girls, we all have the same ring. It represents my childhood and adolescence growing up in Los Angeles and the memories that come to mind when I’m reminded that I’m wearing it. This ring represents friendships, both good and bad, past and present, and how I’ve grown to understand myself through relationships with other people.

  1. Horseshoe– Made of rusted steel, engraved with “Good Luck” text and brown twine is attached.

Given to me at the beginning of the year, this horseshoe represents good luck. I’m very superstitious and I like always having a little good luck charm in my presence. It was also gifted to me by my uncle and aunt as a form of good luck for the school year, and when I see it I think of my love for them and my family.

  1. Musical Cherub– A Firenze MVSEI Postcard, cost about a euro or two, usually has tape on the back of it to be hung on my wall.

I have a postcard from the Uffizi in Florence of the Angiolino Musicante, Musical Cherub, and it sparks a really great memory for me. I went to Florence with my family and was in awe of the museums and artwork. I was granted the privilege to see the art and design I would always use as inspiration for my own work. I loved this painting of the cherub playing the guitar because I’m both a very musical person and I love to draw cherubs on articles of clothing and for gifts for my friends.

  1. Finn’s Drawing– Drawn on sketchbook paper, drawn with Copic Markers. The paper is worn, bent and beat up, but holds a lot of sentimental value.

This drawing my younger brother made for me is of a character from a show we used to watch when we were younger. Finn is one of my biggest inspirations because of his natural artistic talent and, more importantly, his imagination. It allows him to come up with the coolest characters and worlds which he then immerses himself in. I have the drawing by my bed and it keeps me from feeling homesick.

  1. My Headphones– Apple earbuds with a chord which is very annoying, but I take them everywhere.

My headphones I wear almost everyday. Music is my life so I’m always listening to new or old tunes. They represent the love I have for discovering new music and curating music, as well as playing it. In Los Angeles to get anywhere I’d drive in my car and, of course, always be listening to music. Driving just wouldn’t feel right without something playing in the background, so now that I’m in New York and get everywhere by walking, I still have a way of listening to music while I’m mobile.

  1. Photo Strip– Taken in the photobooth at  Le Labo in Venice, Los Angeles. A Black and White strip.

All throughout my life I’ve taken thousands of photobooth photos. From being in the Maui Airport to being in the streets of Florence, Italy, I’ve managed to pull my friends and family into a booth and snap some poses and capture some precious memories. This one specific photobooth strip is from a perfume shop in Venice that I’ve taken hundreds of photos in, but this specific one is of me and my best friend, Sedona. We’ve taken a lot of photobooth photos together.

  1. My Angel Necklace– A gold pendant and chain, engraved with an angel. Usually around my neck alongside a gold star necklace about the same length.

This angel necklace was a gift from my mom this past year. We have a tradition of swapping jewelry, or she’ll pass down of her necklaces for me to wear. This necklace I wear everyday and it reminds me of her. In my family, star and heart symbols decorate everyone’s’ bodies, whether it be through tattoos or jewelry, so it’s just a representation of my family and how we all hold onto a little something to remind us of each other.

  1. My Angel Earrings– Laser cut with blue acrylic and the etchings are filled in with white acrylic.

With the help of a dear friend, I designed these earrings my senior year of highschool for my college portfolio. I love them because I feel like they encapsulate my style and my love for Renaissance art. I also see them as some kind of a good luck charm. My best friend also has the same angel as a tattoo and we call it her guardian angel.

  1. A Paintbrush– Standard Blick flat headed paintbrush, green and gold colored. The brush is stained by charcoal and green watercolor.

I wanted to throw a paintbrush into this charm box because art is obviously a huge part of my lifestyle. Always having a paintbrush around me is like having a lucky charm in my presence because painting has always allowed me to decompress and clear my head.

  1. My Journal– Purchased at CW Pencil Enterprise, colored pink, red and has a black speckled design. It is small but mighty.

My journal, or my diary, holds my feelings and thoughts in it. To decompress and destress I write a lot in it. Most of my entries are in lyric form because I love to songwrite and I find it easier to express myself through rhyme and rhythm. I would much rather read any of my texts on my phone than read something from my journal, just because of how personal and valuable its contents are to me.
