Sustainable Systems Midterm

My idea for my project was to think about how much trash affects New York City and how overtime we adjust to seeing trash on the street or overflowing trash from a bin to be “normal.” Coming from a place that respects nature and goes above and beyond to keep the town clean, this bothered me. I went around the city and took photos of places where i saw trash and thought how it could be affective in the photo of the city I was going to make on photoshop. On Photoshop I made a picture of New York City with a subway station below the skyline leading into the city. Instead of leaving the floor as concrete, I turned it into grass. I did this because I wanted people to feel more strongly about nature and how if there were grass, the trash would look out of place. The point of the piece is to make people feel like we should care more about the trash consumption and how we handle our trash in order to maybe have a greener city. I put the photograph on a t-shirt made from recycled plastic. I sewed the printed photo onto the shirt to follow in the idea that the two materials didn’t fit well together, the same way trash does not belong in any landscape.
