Composition Inspired Drawing

For this project I had to select an example of a Classical composition from Peter Paul Rubens’s painting. In addition, I had to choose an Asymmetrical composition from a Japanese Woodblock print.

Then, I I marked the two compositions in red diagonals using Photoshop.

After marking them, I had to create a still life drawing based on one of the compositions.

I chose a Japanese print in which a woman-figure stands in the middle, while the background is made out of three equal parts, bottom to top.

Arranging objects in my room, I tried to follow the Japanese composition, positioning a table lamp in the centre of my frame, while the background was divided into thirds.

I managed to follow the composition through most of the drawing, adding value and lighting accordingly. Reflecting the drawing in class, I noticed that I I didn’t consider the size and the proportion of the elements in the foreground. By drawing the shade of the lamp more massive on the upper-right part of the frame, I would be able to create a more successful composition.
