SCANOGRAOHY TRIPTYCH

The prompt of this project was to create a scanography triptych which had a narrative behind it. I decided to use a hand as the main subject and use it, or the lack thereof, to add a narrative layer to it. The ripple effects are caused by the shaking of hands and the background plastic as the object was being scanned. Half of the second image has been inverted into a negative and the last image has been liquified using photoshop.

Descriptive terms: The first image consists of two hands, which appear to be slightly interlocked, one hand is significantly smaller than the other. There is a rippling effect on the hands. The background is grey and has a black shadow underneath

The second image contains only one hand, there is a divide in the image caused by the white and somewhat metallic effect on the right side.

The third image has no hands in it. The white/ metallic effect has taken over and filled the entire page.

The narrative was inspired in light of my recent break-up. The first image represents a couple, depicted by the holding of hands. However, the atmosphere is somewhat gloomy, which is suggested by the shadow in the background. The second photo goes to show that there is only one person now, and the hand is laid, not knowing what to do. There is a white wash that is taking over which could be interpreted in different ways: either the start of something new, a ray of hope, the absence of something or emptiness, depending on the viewer. The third image shows that the white wash has taken over the entire page and all that’s left to it is an ambiguity that is open to interpretation.
