ART HISTORY REMAKE

Girl with a Barcode(coat)

Woman in a Purple Coat, 1937, by Henri Matisse

The image I decided to recreate was Woman in a Purple Coat by Henri Matisse. The image depicts a lady with exaggerated hand and foot sizes wearing a purple striped coat. The colours are bright, and Matisse wanted to “express his emotions in life”.

For my recreation, I decided to use more toned down colours to give a more uniform and gloomy atmosphere as well as to represent a more bored outlook to life. I added white stripes to a black coat to represent a barcode. The title also presents a play on words with barcode and coat, it also expresses material culture. I used a Prada bag for the prop instead of the fruits and books as in the originql picture because she is survived by shopping. The subject also wears subtle designer clothing and the Instagram tags of the labels tie to the idea of materialism by also being more current.
