Field Exercise: Listen Union Square

Listening to the audio tracks while in Union Square put an entirely unique perspective on my surroundings. What would usually be just a another casual day, instantly converted my surroundings into something entirely unique and made my imagination flourish. For example, while listening to Peter Vogel’s piece my mind instantly began to re-think my surroundings as if I were living in the 1980s. This is primarily due to the instruments used in this piece that reminded me of many popular songs from the 1980s. This sound track in particular stood out to me the most due to its ability to make my imagination feel as though I have time traveled to another era. Another aspect of this field exercise that I found interesting was how the audio itself could make you feel certain ways. On many occasions while listening to the more intense-sounding audio tracks, my mind would feel as though someone in this mass crowd of people is watching me and that I should possibly be cautious of my surroundings. Overall, partaking in this field exercise really displayed the power that sound can have over the individual. No matter where you are in the world, listening to the right audio track can instantaneously switch up your emotions or even trigger your imagination to run wild.
