Sunshine Movie Reflection

From the very beginning of the film, the sun itself is portrayed as an avatar that symbolizes both power and hope. Visually, the sun is frequently displayed at a far distance. This in particular shows the incredible size and power that the sun has over the characters within the film. Also, most of the time when the sun itself is shown, there is almost always a character looking at it in awe; which conveys the sun as an avatar for hope. The final visual cue in the film that displays the sun’s power is the deep, black background that frames the sun itself. Having there be nothing behind the sun (especially no other planets or random space-debris) except for total darkness creates the symbolism that the sun is the only beacon of hope that the characters are looking toward.

In my opinion, the audio that plays whenever the sun is shown in the film speaks louder than the visuals. For the most part, when the sun appears in a scene where the characters are looking at it, there is usually an ambient silence lingering in the background. Having the sun itself be primarily associated with silence continues thenarrative that the sun is an avatar for power.
