For my website, I wanted to convey the theme of “fate”. Specifically, I wanted to show how powerful fate is and how it is something that is in control of our entire lives. With this in mind, I created a a text-based “choose your own adventure” game revolving around a simple narrative that tied in the theme of fate. The narrative was about a man who walks down the street (entitled: The Man Who Walks) and the user chooses which directions he goes into and what choices he makes. Despite what actions the user chooses the man to do, the story will always conclude in the same way. By the end of the story, the user finds out that they actually weren’t the one controlling the man’s choices, fate was. In fact, fate itself had deceived the user into thinking that they could “become fate” and make the choices for the character within the story. At the very end of the game, the user is told that their punishment for trying to become fate is to be stuck in the paradox that is The Man Who Walks. The paradox itself started when the user first began the adventure and is something that will never end (that is, until the user exits the webpage).
My website fits in with the primary concepts of the unit because it tells a story that initially branches from three different perspectives. Although multiple events stem from these events, the story itself initially begins with three different choices that the user can make.
Working with HTML and CSS has taught me a very important lesson about how to create art. One of the most important things about coding HTML and CSS is being very particular and precise when it comes to entering in a sequence of code. In the broader sense, coding has taught to me to always be particular when it comes to creating art. Specifically, HTML and CSS has taught me to always be careful of making the most minute of mistakes. Because in any form of art, the smallest mistakes can matter the most.
