Exhibition Artist Statement

City Sunset Photos: The concept behind this project was to capture the social classes that there are in the city and in the world. The city is representative of a crowd of people in a sense, where class is determined by shine, much like our own society. I tried to get the lights and darks to be very apparent so that theres juxtaposition between the two.

Video Artist Statement

For this project, we decided to make an interpretive film to portray our first few weeks here at parsons. The video features our emotions through the trip as well as concepts and situations from the trip. Everything in our video has a meaning and it wont be very obvious unless you experienced it yourself or if its explained to you. Overall I’m pretty happy about how it turned out and I think we told a good story through the film.

Concept Proposal

The concept for my project is to capture the evolution of peoples emotions. I’m planning on taking a series of pictures while approaching random people on the streets and capture them as they go from content to angry. I’m anticipating that most people will get angry is a random person is taking a bunch of pictures of them so it will be interesting to see different peoples reactions. When the pictures come out I’m going to put them all side by side so it looks like a continuous series.

Streetwise Review

Streetwise was a very enjoyable film to watch. I twas interesting to see so clear into the lives of homeless kids. Not only did it show us their lifestyle, but also the culture back then. The documentary was put together very well with only b role, and it kept me interested the entire time. I think you showed us this so we could have our eyes opened to another side of life while at the same time showing us an example of a good documentary.

I think this photograph is successful because of it’s real life feel. The photographer captures this candid moment where people are doing what they do and it shows the culture and lifestyle of these people. He doesn’t really use many compositional elements besides good framing. His concept was to capture the moment in a way where we feel like were actually there.

IMG_0490

This picture really well framed, and the subject of the photo is centered. The photographer most likely wanted to just capture the beauty of animals in their natural habitat, but also show the habitat as beautiful too. The lighting is perfect and shadows of the plants around the zebra look cool.

IMG_0492

This picture shows great juxtaposition between the car and the city. You can tell the person sleeping next to the car has no shelter or anything and right next to him in the same picture is a bunch of shelter. The concept was probably to show a simple lifestyle and then the big city where people are busy and doing things.

This photograph creates energy by making our eyes circulate around the picture. The background is smaller which is where our eyes start and then gradually gets larger, also showing repetition and disturbance of the repetition . The repetition is disturbed by the subject.

slow_shutter4

This fast picture shows motion and uses the rule of thirds. The wolfs body comes from the left of the frame and gradually gets smaller until it ends at the middle which is the subject of the picture. Theres a lot of contrast on the nose of the wolf which makes the face stand out more.

sally_man3

this photo represents a good use of the rule of thirds, where there are three subjects but only one is the main subject. Her dress contrasts with the darker dress to the right of her and matches the white shirt to the left.

HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON2

This photo is very well balanced with high contrast of darks and lights from the bottom of the picture to the top. The staircase gets smaller as well as we look up at a unique perspective image. We don’t usually see things from the bottom of spiral staircases.

Kertesz_The_Fork2

The photographer who captured this shot, did so at the exact moment that the boy was about to hit the water. This moment of the action was the photographers idea of the most important part ofd the action, and the shot leaves the viewer to finish out the action in their imagination.

Jim Cohen Response

  1. The overall tone of the documentary felt kind of dark and depressing. The tone of voice that the narrator had was very monotone which went with the slowed down shots and low saturation used in the video.
  2. The film was shot and composed like a documentary, but was telling a personal experience. Usually documentaries have many different perspectives on a certain subject where this one has one persons perspective on many different subjects in one realm; the city.
  3. From what ive heard in class, this film took 8 years to create. During that long period of time, the vibe of the city and the director’s experiences may have changed which probably added more depth to the stories he was telling
  4. Jim Cohen used slow motion and shaky amateur looking cinematography. The whole thing was really blurry and grainy video which I think worked really well for the whole vibe of it. There were very little colors shown too which went along with the monotone narration.
