Writing for Artists: Query

Dear Matthew Melucci,

I have often been afraid that words will fail me especially for subjects I desperately want and need them to be impactful. I can imagine artists- visual expressionists and thinkers have experienced this and possibly absolved themselves of their responsibility in translating personal work. I know I have. This semester I have leaned in; this blog includes pieces that authentically narrate my confused and contradicting inner contemplations.

I like to draw a parallel in my self portrayal and the idea of a ‘first date fantasy’. For this project, I have attempted stepping out of my tried and tested persona. As a viewer I hope you can distinguish the work I have welcomed vulnerability for from the ones where I’ve held back. I haven’t been consistent in pulling away the mask for this class however, with the pieces I have done so- the result has been rewarding. I invite you to a real portrayal of myself. This is simply a slightly filtered version of the words I write in the notes app on my iPhone. These are my musings, my observations and a scratch on the surface of what I’m trying to communicate through my art and behavior.

I hope what I have to say will resonate with you.

Sincerely,

Brinda Grover
