Seminar 2: Visual Culture

Simultaneous Perception – Union Square

It is snowing outside so the streets of Union Square are much less populated and there is not as much to experience. Typically there are performers and people playing music and games, and merchants with their displays, resulting in a bustling environment. On this particular day however, it is almost silent and the few people around are rushing to be somewhere warmer and dryer. The wind seemingly blows from all directions, often in my face, resulting in low visibility. The whole city has a gray tint as a result of all of the white and the colorless sky. The salted sidewalks were the source of most of the noise, crunching under the feet hurrying by. The same honking horns and car motors remains, but aside from the street noise the city has fallen fairly silent. The people are looking down, bundled up, bodies stiff and compacted, moving hastily toward work, or home, or anywhere but here.
