Space & Materiality: Project #2: Platonic Solids Body Extension: Final Form

Questionnaire

1.What is the cultural influence to your work? Tell us about its meaning/context and how it informed your
piece. What does it mean to you? How did you adapt, change, improve the reference by employing A, B,
or C?  My piece talks about pride and how it can be detrimental to anyone who possesses this quality. The shape is inspired by Elizabethan collars which I thought would be fitting because of the relationship the British monarchy has with religion and the church. For me, the first object I think about when I think of pride is a mirror so I used metal plates to symbolize that connection. The metal plates I used are cut so that they mimic a broken mirror and the fact that they’re broken signifies the consequences that come with having pride as it is one of the 7 deadly sins.
2.How did you incorporate Platonic Solid (structural, symbolic meaning)? For my piece, the platonic solid I used was an octahedron. The neck piece is essentially an opened up version of the octahedron because I used the shapes from an octahedron template.
3.How did you incorporate texture? I used scoring to create dents around the structure and to make it look a lot more pointier and sinister. I used broken up metal plates to give it a fragmented texture and appearance. The brads I used to hold down the metal plates create a lot of texture in the back and in the front as well.
