Dress Practice reflection

For my dress practice interview, I interviewed one of my closest friends who is not into fashion as I am but still likes to look and feel good. During the interview, a reoccurring theme was comfort, which she seemed from almost every piece she owned. Another theme was body hugging which she felt was important to her as it allowed her shape to be more visible and made her feel more attractive. Something I noticed about my friend’s dress practice that I had not noticed before was her emphasis on things being comfortable. When looking at her, she usually wears skirts tights and heeled boots, which would never come off as a comfort to me but it is to her. Her dress practice compared to mine is somewhat similar and different at the same time. I dress for mainly on style, which has so be trendy, and appropriate for my body. I also keep in minds factors such as the weather and if I have to walk long distances or not as this will affect the outfit that I would be putting together. Susan B. Kaiser said “The interplay among everyday subject positions is the key idea in intersectionality as a concept”. 1 In terms of subject position, as a fashion major a have a sort of pressure to dress a certain way then I act on it by dressing the way I do. For my friend, she commutes and it often out a lot so her dress practice goes hand in hand with her action. This interview reinforced the idea I had between clothing and the body. Clothing should complement the body rather than take away from it.
