Space & Materiality: Project #1

The object I chose is a small sculpture of a giraffe. It is displayed inside a glass box so the viewers are not able to touch it – This exaggerates the importance and value of the object. Additionally, the material looks very rich. I assume it is marble stones and gold/silver on the outlines of the giraffes. The sculpture itself is not intricate, because the shape of a giraffe can easily be made from wood or plastic (children’s toy) and the giraffe looks humble as they are bending down to eat grass when usually, valuable sculptures would look bold and tall.

When the idea of animal toys came to my mind, I thought that if this sculpture was in a toy box instead of a glass box, it would completely change people’s views towards it. Moreover, if it’s simply a home decor sculpture you could buy at a furniture shop then the value would change as well. My brainstorm sketches are shown below:

I decided to make a photoshop piece to present my object in a different surrounding in order to change its value:
