100 Drawings- Marble statue of a Youthful Hercules

All 100 of these drawings are based off of the statue Marble Statue of a Youthful Hercules, 69-96 AD, commissioned by Emperor Nero. As the name suggests, it’s made from marble. When I started my 100 drawings seated in front of the statue, my style was in a more traditional sketch format. I was focusing on shape and depth rather than content. However, I began to let my sense of humor take over and bring my format back to its cartoonish styles. From the top right of my drawings, you can see the tone and style change as you move to the left. The few serious drawings I have are positioned to the right- ones inspired by Tony Kushner’s Angels in America. I loved this project in the end, even though it was a beast to complete.

My name is Christopher Chu. I am a eternal freshman, cancer, communications design major, fragile asthmatic, reformed theater kid, and emotionally repressed/confused homosexual. I’m in the process of creating my own distinct aesthetic along the lines of the queer diaspora, and using my experience to guide my artwork.
