Descriptions:

* How did you make it? What does it represent? How does it represent you?

– When I first thought of the materials for the wings, I was planning on using fabrics at first, but then I thought about how many of the costume wings are made of fabrics. That said, I wanted to create this wings that is hard but then soft (moveable) at the same time in order to represent the negative side (hard) and the positive side (soft) of me being gay. The wings represent a symbol of my own identity. The color selection on the wings (rainbow) carry significance outside the LGBT community. The wings itself symbolize “Freedom” and how I am able to use this wings with “Pride” and fly wherever I want and be “Set Free” of being who I truly am. It also represent how being gay can be a pain in the ass but once you’re out of the closet you are no longer alone and life is only to get better in your life.

* What gesture did you choose and why?

– Within those three images that I posted above, The third image is definitely my favorite image out of all three images and the reason behind it is that The gesture that I did and the lighting that I captured basically portray the significant/important things that had happened throughout my life and how pointing a path symbolizes a way for me to escape the reality (moving away from a homophobic father to a country where I am allow to be who I am and have the freedom of doing things that I wanted to do without hiding it)

* Who were you inspired by and why?

– I got my inspiration thought artist Sylvia Palacios through her exhibition “Rituals of Rented Island” collection. (the big giant hands) I really like how Sylvia over exaggerated her art work by wrapping herself in a spiral of brown paper that lies in a 10 foot wide sheet on the floor. After viewing her work, I got this idea of making a huge wearable piece that I catch people’s attention and express my feelings emotions, and my self identify through it.

* What material did you choose and why?

I used color papers and black cardboard x2

– There isn’t a specific reason why I choose those materials for my project, but as I mentioned in the first question, I wanted to make a wings that’s different from others (costume design) because many of them are made to fabrics. Though maybe I should try on different materials and make it work. (Plus I have a budget for this project as well….)

* What part of the body did you choose and why?

– I choose my back as where the wearable piece goes on and the reason behind that is because I wanted to set myself free from those critical people, people that are cold and mean and close-minded. I wanted to create this wings that allows me to fly to different places with “Pride” and “Happiness.”

* How do you feel when you wear your piece?

-When I have the wing on, I feel confident, happy, and a feeling of being part of something (a group of people, etc.) Knowing that there are people out there in this world who are just the same or facing the same issue as me.
