The 8th Floor

The first piece that I saw, when I entered the room was this weird cage with a drum pedal.

M’Boom (2016) by Michael Kelly Williams

It catched my attention because it combines objects that I wouldn’t usually put together like a birdcage, a drum pedal, whistles and black light bulbs. But yet somehow they work perfectly together. From far away it looks pretty simple, but when you come closer you get an opportunity to examine each part of the artwork individually.

After that I turned to the left and saw a massive artwork made out of tiny pieces of metal.

Metals II (2014) by El Anatsui

It was made out of found aluminum and copper wire. The way the tiny metal pieces are placed, create an illusion of folds on the metal canvas, which makes the piece look flexible. But at the same time there is a feeling that in the process of making, someone forgot to move the rope, which was underneath the artwork at a time, so when the piece has dried the rope left a little dent in the metal.

Then I walked around a bit more and stumbled upon this pink flowy piece.

Love (2008-2018) by Maren Hassinger

The first two things that catched my attention were the size and vibrant color. It was very unusual to see trash bags in this color because usually you have only 3 options: white, black, and clear. The material that the artist chose for this piece contradicts the feeling of love but yet it seems to be a perfect fit.
