Journal entry: Visiting Artist – Amy Khoshbin

I knew that we were supposed to have Amy Khoshbin as a visiting artist that class, but I still wasn’t there on time. I entered the room and apologized for being late and interrupting Amy. She was very energetic and sweet, she turned my way, smiled, and said nothing but hello. I wasn’t ready for a reaction like that because I was expecting a more conventional artist.

One thing that I noticed almost instantly was Amy’s energy – she is so passionate and confident, which you can definitely see in her work. I believe, Amy showed us her most recent and most known pieces because they all seemed to be done in one kind of style. I find her style very interesting due to her using different materials. It seems like she mostly makes art with her own body, it can be either stand up comedy, solo performance or a game, where everyone can take part.

One work that really stood out to me is called The Myth of Layla. As Amy later explained the idea behind the piece was too dark for her to continue performing it, but if you don’t take the idea into consideration, and just look at the visual aspect of the piece you can understand why I am so captivated by it. It is not a not just a regular performance – where the artist is secluded by an invisible wall from the audience – it is made like a game so everyone feels included. I think it is a good way to not only interact with your audience but also to interest new people in it.
