Buildings in Coney Island

During my first few walks, I noticed all of the different buildings. And I also realized that my data visualization project for my studio class was about housing, which also included some economic aspects like the value of the houses and how much the majority people living in Coney Island pay for rent. That made me realize the topic that I am interested in is housing.

So during this walk, I focused on noticing the different buildings and their distinct features. I looked at their location, their age and what they are made out of.

I found out that most of the buildings are for the most part pretty old and later I did some research and found data which stated that the majority of the buildings were built in the 60s and 70s.

The only new buildings I saw were a part of Luna Park apartment complex. They looked very clean, and the space in between the tall buildings was used for several children’s playgrounds and nice outdoor community space. There were also a lot of minor construction projects going around that apartment complex.

I am studying the buildings because I’m trying to find out more about the people and gentrification  in order to help my reader understand the connection between the past and present in Coney Island.
