Exposing Housing Discrimination: A Conversation with Marge Turner and Justin Carter

The video talks about racial discrimination and the way Marge Turner conducted her experiments to determine if the discrimination was still happening. During these tests, several white men as well as men of color went to see the same apartments and gave the exact same information about themselves (where they work and how much they earn). In the end, it was determined that men of color were treated the same as white men but were shown 17.7% fewer units.

Redlining

In this video, an African-American couple describes how difficult it was for them to buy a house when they were younger because of their race. After being in the army, Eugene Burnett was promised a lower house price and easy credit terms. But the couple was denied only because of their race. At that time it played a significant role in real estate assessment. Neighborhoods were evaluated on the percentage of non-white people living there and given a mark. The higher the rate of non-white people was the more dangerous it was considered.

Both of these videos gave me a broader view of the housing market and the segregation that was a part of it and maybe still is.
