Who is Denise?

My name is Denise  Hewitt, a Brooklyn-born photographer, writer, and activist. Though legally an American, I was and am raised in a Vincentian household. St Vincent and a the Grenadines is a Caribbean island, where I find myself the most at home.There’s something about Soca music and dancehall, salt fish and breadfruit, and the smell of burning firewood that fills me with ease. My family would be my greatest inspiration, from my great-grandmother’s triumphant story of immigration during the civil rights era, to the strong brotherhood of my grandfather and his adopted best friend. I was able to make a tribute to my great grandmother last November when I shot a look book for Barneys New York. I’ve made strides in photography and this is definitely where I want to continue exploring, but I miss getting messy with my hands. I miss making paper teddy bears at eight years old and selling duct tape pens at eleven. I want to customize and create, maybe even to photograph the end product.
