Objects as History Reflection

  1. During this semester, the most compelling periods we studied were ancient Greece and Rome, as well as Ancient Asia and Africa. I liked the style and pieces the most from these periods. It was also interesting to learn the differences in style during similar time periods in different areas. It definitely gave some context to my knowledge of art today, and regional perspectives. It was also interesting to learn how cultures developed, and what changes were made as people gained more knowledge about art and the world.
  2. how would you rate performance this semester / match your anticipations / why I felt my performance this semester was good. I liked most of the writing I was able to do during the course, as the assignments were fairly broad and gave way to creative freedom. I liked the class discussions we had as well. I feel that my performance matched my expectations, as I usually enjoy lecture classes and am able to keep up with them.
  3. I realized how much art is a time stamp for historical ideas and cultures, and the importance of ancient art to all art studies. Because ancient people created a basis for all we know and practice in art today, it was important for me to understand where all that knowledge and technique originated. I also got a more firm understanding of the stylistic differences of cultures around the world, and how those styles changed throughout time with changing ideas and people in power. It was also fascinating to see how the focus of art changed throughout time – from being used for religious purposes, to depicting those in power, etc.
