[Time] Project #1a : Time Map ‘Transformations of Time’

The aim of the first project in Time was to observe and analyze the variable relationship between time and distance and how it is influenced by social and environmental factors. With the observation made in two contrasting locations in NYC, the class was asked to createtwo maps, Drawing map and Text map using drawing, photography and texts.

 

 

The two location I chose were the path train that I ride everyday and a Newport mall where there are lots of floating population.

I went to the  two location, spent some time on each place and tried to observe how people move, act and spent time along the place.

With the observation I had, I tried to brainstorm on how to map the relationship between time and distance and I thought that time and distance were another  dimensions that were invisible to human eyes, like multiple layers we use to create a single finen image in Photoshop. Moreover, I thought that different colors exist to show the speed and distance that people have moved and these colors are left on the path that people have passed through like a traces. With these ideas, I started to create a drawing map and text map that express time and distance with colors and traces, and that could be layered to express  the quality of invisible dimension.

<Location 1 : Path train>

 

For the map of path train, since the movement was made by the train not by the people themselves, I used color blue to represent that there are no actual actions being made. However, despite the fact that people are not ‘moving’ but the train, the physical distance was actually being  convered very fast, and I tried to illustrate them by tracing their afterimages in continuity.For the map of path train, since the movement was made by the train not by the people themselves, I used color blue to represent that there are no actual actions being made. The text map was illustrated or written to represent the same principles as the drawing map but with the thoughts that people have regarding the locations and times they have in mind.

 

<Location #2 : Newport mall>

In case of the Newport mall, the movements were made by the people themselves, so this time I tried to express them with the warm color, orange. Moreover, the movements were slower that the after images were drawn more occasionally and the text map was illustrated in the same manner accordingly.

Observing and analyzing invisible and abstract qualities and working with them to visualize them were hard but valuable experience. Through this project, I realized that time is surely an abstract subject that differs by in which direction or perspective I see it but I think that is what makes it more interesting. I hope exploration of time in later steps will widen my ability to understand and convey both what is visible and invisible.
