the relation of the producers to the sum total of their own labor is presented to them as social relation, existing not between themselves, but between the products of their labor 37/53 What we create is an extension of the self, therefore trading, comparing, and innovating these items, is similar to participating in socializing. Just as we exchange words, we exchange products of our labor.
The equalization of the most different kinds of labor can be the result only of an abstraction from their inequalities, or of reducing them to their common denominator 38/53 This is simply trading, meaning, in an abstract sense of reason, two completely different items can be seen or valued as equal. This is interesting considered the inevitability of different kinds of labor requiring different amounts of energy to complete.
It is value, rather, that converts every product into a social hieroglyphic. 38/53 Value, or price, creates a social hieroglyphic because it represents the importance of a good or service relative to a community. This gives price, its own numerical language, allowing those to see a commodity differently, or feel more compelled by it.
