Project 3: Soical-Ecological Space and Materiality

3.1 Considering Social Space

I think a social space could be anywhere if there is more than two people gathered around. When I go to beach, park, city, and resturant, these places makes me feel social because there are lots of people in those area. Many people having a social life in those places, so I feel social when I go to these places and communicate with people. For example, at the park, many people gathered around with their pets, friends, and families. This place is a good example of people communicating and making that place as a social space. On the other hand, I feel anti-social when I am walking alone in fancy city like New York. Also, if I am around with people who I do not know, I feel anti-social. Most of the time, I feel social because I go to school in the big city.
Usually, I need to be with people I know for a space to be a social space because there is less communication if I am with strangers. However, if there many people then it is a social space, so the emotional part and facts are combined when I am thinking about this topic. In my opinion, a social behavior is interactions among individuals, normally within the same species, that are usually beneficial to one or more of the individuals. As I mentioned before, if there are more than one person it could be a social space to me. Because there will be different quntity of people everyday depend on time, environment, and situation that they have.
As a foreigner, many Korean people have similar thoughts as me. For other culture I really don’t know what they think, but I researched some culturals for this project. I did not find any sources, but I think broadly it is depending on country’s personality. For example, Japanese people are very individual, so they might don’t care if there’s strangers in social space.
