Course Reflection

Short post

During seminar class, the most interesing articles for me were Entwistle and Davis. First, Entwistle’s article was significant to me because I did not have basic knowledge of dressed body. When I fist took, fashion stuidio and seminar class I only had few information of fashion design, so Entwistle’s article taught me the relation between dress and body. She explained her thoughts and facts very clearly. The author also used the history as a source, and I learned this method and applied them to my research paper.
This writing connects to the project called “Past Imperfect” from studio class because before we make our three-piece ensemble, we did many steps to make better design for the final piece. We had to consider about the funtion, fabric, form, and connection, so this to do these steps “The Dressed Body” helped me to understand the concept of studio project. For next year, I am not taking any fashion related class, but she gives history of body I could use this for my drawing.

Secondly, “Blue Jeans” by Fred Davis was also compelling because it was easy to read and it was not boring when I read it. This writing is significant to me because before I read it, I only knew that the minners wore blue jeans. After I read his aritlce, I learned the history, design structure, and labeling of blue jeans. In addition, I learned the types of jeans, His writing is connected to the studio project called “Material Transformation” that we did in stuido class because on his writing he wrote about pattern of jeans and the research about designers. I want to keep it in my learning portfoilo because sometimes I might need it, or if I forget the information, I can find this immediately.

A long post

My name is Diane Dahyun Nam, and my major is Illustration. I am interested in children book illustration and fashion illustration. I immigrated from South Korea to Caliornia, and I moved in to New York city to study art. This city and Parsons school help me to learn many things about art. I like New York city because I can get great inspirations and experiences from surroundings.

These are my two projects from studio class, and they are quiet similar to each other because of the vibrant colors. Also, they both seems like a collage even if one is a photography. The differences of these two artworks are that one is an image and one is a collage. The process was totally different and the way that I planned for the projects were very different. The theme of my studio 1 class was memory, so the projects we did are mostly about time and memory. We expressed our own memory, history, and also we created a story. Through these proejects, I learned photoshop, premiere, and illustrator. However, from studio 2, I learned different techiques like sewing, pattern making, and researcing about fashion. The connection between studio and seminar class were very stronger than other required classes like time or space classes. Most of the time, the theme of stuido or semniar has to be matched to each other. In addition, for readings in seminar were related to studio project. When I used and learned new techniques from school, such as 3D printing, laser machine, and wood shop. These new experiences made me more exciting because for some of them I never heard of it, but now I know there are new techology and also learn how to use them. These new techinques were hard at the first time, but as time goes by, I enjoyed that I learned new techiques normal people cannot do. To use and know these, sometimes I had to research what are they and how can I use them. This processes were helpful because then I can understand before we learn something new during class time.

The two highlights fromm first year are studio 2 fashion ensemble and second hand project from space class. For studion three-piece ensemble. It was my first time making clothes, so I did not know what to do. However, studio professor kindly taught us from the basic like how to use sewing machine, how to make a pattern for clothings, and other little details. First, we design our garment, and the three pieces had to be transform form, so be did a four and nine steps drawings. After that, we started to make muslin sample for our garment to make a pattern. We practiced to make a pattern with musline and used actual fabric to make a fianl piece. To do all of these steps, we researched photos in pinterest to find good examples for inpirations. We also made moodboard to orgainze our thoghts. My second highlight is a project called second hand from space class. Before I design a shape of paper hand, we had to research hard animal skins for inspirations. These two highlights represent what I want to learn and exprience before I move to the major classes because as I grow up I always wanted learn fahsin design, and anything that is three dimentional. I followed the instructions on canvas, but sometimes I had to change or use different method to do my project. Next time, I would like to visualize 3D spaces and apply these to ensemble and the paper hand. The intereting part about this was that I learned what I desired to learn from many years. It was successful because I finally learn how to use sewing machine and make a cloth with it.

In the future, I am questioning to myself if I become successful illustrator or a person with other art related jobs. However, for now, I really want to become an illustrator , especially, I want to write and draw children’s book or a drawing book for adults. Also, my big dream is to collaborate with Channel or draw a illustration for them because Channel is my most favorite designer. If the project have any connection, they could generate another. For example, studio and seminar project could generated if the theme or basic ideas are matching, even if they are in different format. Next year, I want to learn how to make a video with photoshop because I tried to do in time class, but it was not successful, so I want to learn that again. Also, I want to find my own style of illustration because for now I am not sure of my drawing style. Other then these techniques, I believe that there are more things that I can learn in Parsons. I would like to experiences as many as possible to expand my learning experiences.
