Reading Response 1

The first aphorism I chose was “Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold.” I think, in the simplest terms, this means that fashion is an expression of ourselves in every-way, whether it’s our past our present or our future. I do agree with what is being said in the first sentence; I think the way we dress shows our character and what we believe in. Sometimes its mundane and maybe not related but sometimes it is purely a representation of you and you feel confident in it. A combination of clothes that you understand and admire. I thought of the futures being told with fashion is something I don’t understand. I think clothes from the past make us relieve the memories, but still not completely because today is very different from yesterday in many ways. I think it evokes nostalgia but if the clothing and the environment around it are in sync, which now I guess they are not. My second aphorism is “Fashion is not necessarily spectacular (though it often conforms to the theory of the society of the spectacle), it can also be demotic, ordinary, mundane, routine and humble. It is the stuff of the ethnographer and the anthropologist.” I think this statement depicts something that fashion industry has faced or still is facing, boredom. Fashion has seem to become ordinary with less ideas being explored especially in the current. As a personal person reading this, I do think clothes that I put on myself are many times mundane. I agree with this aphorism and I think sometimes fashion is something we have to do or take into account every time we step out the door.
