Artifacts of Fashion

After visiting the exhibition called “Is Fashion Modern?”, I found that artifacts do convey the history of clothing. Clothing is part of our life and we usually neglect its function, history and forms.

part 1

part 2

item1:

Designer: Martin Margiela
Name of Item: shoes
Origin:France
Season/Year:2008

What’s more , I found an interesting pair of shoes from Martin Margiela. This wired shape of shoes caught my attention immediately. The designer was inspired by Japanese traditional socks who has split-toe shape in order to put on a Japanese shoes called Jika-tabi. (H) He says:” I want to create an ‘Invisible’ shoe”. I think this kind of shoes emphasizes the shape of people’s feet(B). And because it is wired so it can be the chat topic.(S) In the contrast, I found the traditional Japanese style shoes. This shoes is also split-toe shape but they are different. For me, I think I can first wear Martin Margiela’s shoes then I can put on the Jika-tabi. They perfectly match each other.

Item 2

Designer: Laulhere
Name of Item: Beret
Origin: France
Season/Year: 2017

When I first saw this hat, I was wondering why this normal beret could be displayed in this exhibition so I did some research on beret. The beret firstly was designed for military uniform. With the development of society, it became a decoration now. Also, many people consider beret as a symbol of artist and hipster. For the method of production, originally it was made by local craft, because of the high demand of beret, it became industrialized in 19th century. There are so many materials that can be used for beret like wool and silk. For me, I will feel more confident to wear it if this beret matches my outfit.

Item 3

Designer: Yves Saint Laurent
Name of Item: Le Smoking
Origin: France
Season/Year: 1967

For example, I found a le smoking from Yves Saint laurent at the beginning part of the exhibition. The designer was trying to create something that women can wear during the work. (S)It was inspired by the clothing that gentlemen would wear in order to smoke easily after dinner.(H) This suit emphasizes women’s body shape and make regular suites more feminine.(B) For comparison, I found a little black dress from Gianni Versace. I think this dress completely shows the feminine side of girls’ nature. Instead of cover the whole body, it shows a little bit part of body in order to by girlish and sexy. Although they are all black clothing, they are totally different from each other.
