“Summer Bummer”

1.At first, I wanted to make a three-piece ensemble which are made up by a off-shoulder silk dress, a leather corset and a chocker. I was inspired by Eugene Atget’s pictures and the exhibition in FIT because they both made me feel that the corset is interesting. So I decide to write a research paper in my seminar class and make a real corset in my studio class.

2.So for the original design, my intention was to make something that shares the same feeling  with Eugene Atget’s pictures. And the three pieces have their own straightforward functions. The off-shoulder dress is puffy so it can make the wearer comfortable. The corset can show wearer’s sexy curves and the chocker can make the look more formal. And my intention of the transformation is that I want to explore how a look can be changed in a different look with just a few simple steps.

3.I used silk, leather, robes and a fabric like fishing net. I bought them all in mood and I will keep them for my projects in the future.

4. The designed did not change a lot. But the making process changed a lot. For example, I wanted to separate the sleeve into three parts and them put them together into one sleeve. Then I realized that it was too difficult and time-consuming, so I cut the sleeve in one part and sewed it.

5. I learned so many new techniques and knowledges form this project because I have never really made clothing before. I learned how to use different sewing machine, I learned how to draw patterns, and I learned how to sew. Also I learned how to solve difficulties by myself.

6. I would improve my sewing skills and the accuracy of size.
