This week, we visited the Hellenistic and Ethnological wings of the Metropolitan Museum in order to draw the figurative sculptures with the use of cross contour. We first practiced using cross contour in class by drawing a from a set up of bagels. Cross contour is something that I quite dislike so I found it quite difficult to use it to describe the form of the bagel.

In the museum itself, I decided to draw the ‘Marble Statue of a Youthful Hercules’ and the ‘Marble Statue of a Seated Muse’ before moving over to the African section to draw some of their traditional masks that was to be used for a composition due the following week. I really liked how these drawings turned out, especially the one of the seated muse whose form I felt was the most accurately described in terms of line work and proportion.
