Raining Peppers

For this piece, we were to create a composition from a pepper by varying their scales and directions such that it was ‘raining peppers’. It was important to pay attention to their internal forms and to use penetrating lines as the main means to describe it rather than relying on shading. The pepper itself is full of internal forms and held a complexity that I did not previously realize. In this aspect, as explained by our professor, it is very similar to the form of a human body and how to realistically draw it.

I paid close attention to my line work when drawing this piece, intentionally pushing my lines further in than I instinctively would and trying to be bolder with it. I also tried not to rely too heavily on shading, only really employing it towards the centre of the piece as a means to make it the focal point. Instead, I focused on varying the density of my lines in order to create depth. Overall, I really liked the outcome of this piece and I really felt that it helped me to improve my line work and my ability to express form.
