  • a lot of immigration history
    • foreign influence, escape to find a safe home, job creation, medical and economic aid, living arrangements, lack of women with Chinese Exclusion 1882-1943
      • became sight of gang violence, poor = illegal motives to get by
      • tongs
  • in 1965, chinatown was accepted/welcomed/appropriated in manhattan society
    • ex: lampposts/lanterns, phone booths/decorations
  • Chinese Lunar New Year parade, jewelers, cuisine, street vendors with knock off, tourism

I’m very excited to see/experience:

  • the red lanterns like floating in sky from pictures
  • closely packet vendors
  • the way people talk to each other
  • what they are selling
  • the attitude/interactions between people who live/work in chinatown ant tourists/visitors
  • children running around
  • animals?
  • noise and smells
  • traditional authenticity vs. knock off commercialism/materialism
  • art/architecture/style: comparing Chinatown to chelsea, greenwich, downtown, etc.
