Bridge 4

  • For this final project, I created my own aesthetic to create a relaxing, and calm space. From the past two years, I found it very calming to have a comfort space, or “getaway” place that I can always go whether I want to get work done, destress, or spend quality time with friends. These places are all different in their own ways, and they all carry a soothing ambience of its own with its own aesthetic. The aesthetics that help set the overall tone/mood of the place was what decided where those places were going to be. During the research and thinking process, I looked into different areas or specific places I can place this aesthetic in and what kind of aesthetic I was going for. While thinking about places, I thought about my home in South Korea, which prompted me to create an aesthetic inspired by the the beautiful outdoors of the space. I chose this specific place as my motivation behind creating this final design because a part of me wanted to create an soothing space where I can feel reconnected or reminded of a place that is also my home but yet so foreign and distant. To the audience, this aesthetic can help to create that soothing atmosphere where one can reflect, meditate, or simply relax in. I wanted to focus on how decorative elements can effect the space that it is in and set the tone of the atmosphere. In this space, I want the people to feel calm and relaxed, and absorb the space in a positive way.
  • In seminar, I researched areas where my aesthetic can be fully absorbed and appreciated to its fullest. I looked into cafes, restaurants, and other social places where many people would be in the space. But as I continued creating the design in studio, I decided that my aesthetic would be more suitable in a calmer environment and help create a more therapeutic aura. Between nursery homes and spas, I chose to place my aesthetic in a massage room of a place called Shinbui spa, where a soothing atmosphere is already present in space and can be elevated even more with the help of an additional aesthetic. The area that this is held is in important because if placed in a busier place, the space wouldn’t be as effective or absorbed in the way it was intended to be. I can image this attracting people who specifically wish to be a calming space with a decorative element they appreciate.
