Open Works

When we first began this project, I had a broad idea of where I wanted to go with the concept of timelessness. However, the more time I spent with the topic, the more I began to feel engulfed by confusion. For some reason, I felt as though I ran out of ideas and did not know where to take the concept of timelessness and what angle I wanted to approach it from. However, I stuck with two of my main ideas: the use of newspaper to emphasize an item that is timeless and the use of denim to embody a timeless article of clothing. Additionally, I still used the concept of the color red to embody the red lipstick I find to be timeless. My overarching question is “What does timelessness mean to you?” Hence the reason I created a collage utilizing my own interpretations of timelessness. When creating the final version of this project, I decided to utilize a photograph that is my rendition of a timeless photo (of myself). I knew that I wanted to create more than one piece hence the reason I created a diptych. I used the photo on both pages of my project but ensured that half of my face was on each separate piece. Ensuring that the photo was on both pieces created a deeper cohesiveness between both works and allowed me to use the negative space on either side of the photo to collage. I decided to pursue collage due to the fact that I had enjoyed it very much in the Frames of Reference project. However, this time I integrated the use of digital collage as well as analog collage. I wanted both pieces to have a lot of movement and tactility. These elements were important to me due to the fact that I wanted to represent the movement of time. In the left piece, I overlaid a denim collage I created in photoshop and layered it on top of the photo of the left side of my face. I made sure that the detailing of the jeans was still visible due to the fact that I wanted to capture the stitching, texture and shade of denim. On the left side of the photo, I sewed denim swatches onto the negative space and created a collage using words I cut out from newspapers and thread that I used to create different stitching patterns to further the movement within the piece. On the right side of my diptych, I created a newspaper collage and overlaid it over the right side of my face. I then bought a newspaper and began looking for words that spoke to me and my idea of timelessness. I used different paper materials, newspaper fragments, strategic words and thread to collage this side of the diptych. I had a really enjoyable time and felt as though the piece turned out better than I could have planned. I allowed my own interpretations of timelessness to speak for themselves and I would say my piece is successful. To me, timelessness can mean many things. Things that are timeless to me: love, family, care, red lipstick, photographs, etc. The piece was created to be multi-dimensional and stimulating. When looking at the piece, you can understand certain words and key elements but still think for yourself.
