Podcast Concept Description

In our exploration of public vs. private spaces, we want to look at the conversion of public spaces into private ones, and how exclusivity affects our environment. In this particular episodial podcast we are doing our own investigative research into the most private public spaces in New York; including speakeasys, underground bars, hidden restaurants, and underground clubs. We would like to see how these operate, who knows about them, how people interact with the space differently knowing that it’s more secluded and how sound travels through these spaces to create a different atmosphere to a more public space. Does a public turned private space only work because of its exclusivity and privity? or do the spaces act as more of a relief from public spaces? These are some questions we will be exploring as we do our field research and begin to develop a series of sounds and a deeper understanding for the public turned private scene in New York.
