Robyn Caplan gave a very insightful presentation, and while it was informative it was very difficult to keep on pace with. As she progressed from topic to topic she did very little to transition the ideas into the next, sometimes I would get lost in what she was communicating. At the times where I was able to understand the point she was making with context, I think the knowledge was very important to furthering my understanding of private and public on internet medias.

I appreciated the honesty in which she explained our true lack of privacy we have on the internet. Without missing a beat she detailed all the steps that large companies go through to secure data from us to profit on. Some of these steps I was not aware of and appreciated being taught for once. In addition to this point she was already making she tried to tie in the concept of how these media companies brand themselves as technology companies first. I don’t think she successfully tied the concepts together but I could fill in the blanks, and as a brand designer I was able to relate all the times I have branded one thing as something else to this concept. Companies just like us have private and public identities, it is important that we separate the two and know what we are buying into.

Her extensive understanding of the history of the internet was also nice to hear. For someone who uses the internet on a daily basis I oddly enough had no knowledge on who created it and what it was created for. I was building stories in my head from myths about it that I had been told, I am glad she shed some light on these misconceptions I had.
